ART LECTURE SERIES GRANT AWARDED TO ST. AUGUSTINE ART ASSOCIATION

The Florida Humanities Council recently awarded the St. Augustine Art Association a Partnership Grant to produce a series of art history lectures entitled St. Augustine: Forces in Art.  The talks will be held on Thursday evenings, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the Art Association, 22 Marine Street on the following dates:

November 19, 2009:  Parallel Worlds: Western Europe and the New World
David Ouellette, SJRCC Art History Professor, will give a rich pictorial presentation about Western European influences during the founding of St. Augustine.

January 21, 2010:  Florida's Legacy: From Concept to Completion
Jackson Walker, resident artist at the Museum of Florida Art, will explore Florida's early struggles while describing his process of creating dramatic historical paintings.

February 18:  Jacob Lawrence: The Story Painter and His St. Augustine Interlude
As part of Black History Month, Dr. Carolyn Williams, UNF History Professor, will discuss the life and work of this celebrated African-American artist.

March 25:  If Walls Could Talk: The Art of Mural Painting
Don Martin, Flagler College Professor of Fine Art, will share details of the recent mural restoration at Flagler College along with an overview of the colorful art and civic role of murals.

April 22:  Architectural Heritage of St. Augustine
Historian David Nolan will take viewers on an armchair adventure through St. Augustine's urban environment of yesterday and today, identifying important structures from the colonial period, Flagler era and boom time.

"These lectures are a great way to connect with our history and to experience a deeper appreciation of art,"  said Elyse Brady, Administrator for the St. Augustine Art Association.  "We had tremendous turnouts last year and hope the community will again take part in this wonderful free programming."

The state affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities, the Florida Humanities Council sponsors programs that explore Florida's history, folklore, art, literature, music and environment.  The St. Augustine Art Association is a non-profit arts organization founded in 1924 for the purpose of promoting excellence in the arts through exhibitions and education.  The lectures are free; however, reservations are required due to limited seating.  For more information and to reserve a seat, call (904) 824-2310.

"Jean Wagner Troemel Best of Show Award" to be given at Art Association Fall Member's Show

The St. Augustine Art Association announces the newly established Jean Wagner Troemel Best of Show Award, which will be given for outstanding artistic achievement at every exhibit starting with the upcoming Fall Member's Show on display Sep. 6 - 27.  StAAA member artists are invited to submit works on Tuesday and Thursday, Sept. 2 and 3, noon to 7p.m. in the Main Gallery, 22 Marine Street.  The entry fee is $15. The exhibit will consist of art in a variety of media and subject matter.  A preview will be held on First Friday Art Walk, Sept. 4, and the Opening Reception is slated for Sunday, Sept. 6, 2 to 4 p.m. at which time the winning entries will be announced.

Over the span of her decades-long career, Jean Troemel has produced more than 1,000 paintings including 600 commissioned portraits.  She is listed in the Directory of American Portrait Artists, The World's Who's Who of Women and is a Fellow in the Royal Society of Art in London.  She founded the local P.A.St.A. (Professional Artists of St. Augustine) Gallery and was the catalyst for starting the downtown "art hops" now known as First Friday Art Walks.  Troemel recently completed two portraits of Mayor Joe Boles and Council on Aging Director, Cathy Brown.  Several of her paintings received top honors during the 2008/2009 season at the St. Augustine Art Association.

In conjunction with the Fall Member's Show, a Mini-Masters exhibit of works by the children and grandchildren of Art Association members will also be featured.  For information about membership and art exhibit entry requirements, please contact the St. Augustine Art Association at (904) 824-2310.
